Full Moon Gratitude Ceremony

The full moon represents a time of gratitude by honoring and enjoying the rewards of our efforts. It represents a time when our dreams, goals, and manifestations come to fruition. Ancestral cultures would also use each full moon to record time.

We honor the full moon just as the indigenous natives once did. This is the time when Grandfather Sun and Grandmother Moon can both be seen in the sky are opposite of each other with Mother Earth in between.

In North American culture, we will not have a fire at night as it is disrespectful to the beautiful light of Grandmother Moon. We will allow our eyes to adjust to the light of the moon reminding that there is light in dark places.

Whether it’s just you or a group of people, you will take turns passing the talking stick in a sunwise direction and expressing your gratitude out loud. This can be of recent changes, new relationships, a new job, finishing old projects, etc.

Here is an example prayer you can say at a full moon ceremony.

Mitakuye Oyasin Prayer

Mitakuye Oyasin (All My Relations) is a traditional Lakota Sioux prayer, with its opening phrase used as a refrain in many Lakota prayers and songs. It reflects the inherent belief of most Native American traditions and belief systems that “Everything is connected.” The phrase translates as “all my relatives,” “we are all related,” or “all my relations.” It is a prayer of oneness and harmony with all forms of life: other people, animals, birds, insects, trees and plants, and even rocks, rivers, mountains and valleys.

The Prayer

Aho, Mitakuye Oyasin…. All my relations. I honor you in this circle of life with me today. I am grateful for this opportunity to acknowledge you in this prayer….

To the Creator, for the ultimate gift of life, I thank you.

To the mineral nation that has built and maintained my bones and all foundations of life experience, I thank you.

To the plant nation that sustains my organs and body and gives me healing herbs for sickness, I thank you.

To the animal nation that feeds me from your own flesh and offers your loyal companionship in this walk of life, I thank you.

To the human nation that shares my path as a soul upon the sacred wheel of Earthly life, I thank you.

To the Spirit nation that guides me invisibly through the ups and downs of life and for carrying the torch of light through the Ages, I thank you.

To the Four Winds of Change and Growth, I thank you.

You are all my relations, my relatives, without whom I would not live. We are in the circle of life together, co-existing, co-dependent, co-creating our destiny. One, not more important than the other. One nation evolving from the other and yet each dependent upon the one above and the one below. All of us a part of the Great Mystery.

Thank you for this Life.

Moon Time

In some indigenous cultures, the moon also represented a time of menstruation and was a very important time for women. This is because a women’s menstrual cycle was so close to the cycle of the moon, once per month. You may have heard it being referred to as, “Moon Time.”

Gratitude Exercise:

  • Make a list of everything you are grateful for.
  • Make a list of everything you want.

This can help remind us to be grateful and show appreciation for what we already have. In turn this helps attract more of what we want. This coaching exercise can help you learn to understand that you already have everything you need, and if it is something you feel you need and don’t have, this will help you to learn to trust that it will come into your life at exactly the time it is supposed to. This is known as divine timing. The universe is not going to give you something you are not ready for.

Too often we are focused on what we want instead of what we already have. It is okay to have goals, dreams and desires. In fact, to have those is encouraged. However, we have to acknowledge what we already have as well. We just have to remember in being thankful for the present, we have to be patient for the future, when the things and events will come and lead us to where we want to be. So relax, be grateful for what you have now and expect everything to turn out exactly how you imagine it… if not better!

Ask yourself these powerful questions:

  • What did you like most about this exercise?
  • Did you experience any insight or ah-ha moments?
  • How could you show more care and appreciation for what you already have
  • What would that look and feel like?

Create an action plan: What actions are you willing to take to achieve the things you want more of? Write them down.
